It is a known fact that the Alberta winters aren’t very subtle. The weather can change in three minutes or when you blink. It could snow and be -25c in the morning and come noon time you’ll have a good a +16c sunny day.
This winter has been very forgiving though. We’ve had the warm days throughout the week and sometimes a few days of -15c and maybe the coolest is about -29c from what I can remember but who’s complaining? I’ve been to -56c and it wasn’t pretty. I have embraced the “warm” winter this time and made the most out of it.
From where I came from, there’s no winter sports. The Philippines is a tropical country and in summer, you’ll find people going to the resorts and beaches. The closest ice activity you can get is indoor ice skating which I have tried a few times when I was younger with my brother and cousins. We have no ski resorts or ski lodges there and it is fun to experience hanging out with friends, playing in snow and doing winter stuff.
If you will embrace winter, there is really more to it than bundling up and shoveling your walkway and driveway. Skiing, snow boarding, outdoor ice skating and my favourite – snow tubing (yay!) are some of the things you can do while winter is here. Not to mention the amazing gondola ride on ski resorts, watching people go down the hill while snowboarding and skiing and seeing the mountains with white peaks make a good winter experience.
I love how my husband gets excited when we plan on going to a snow boarding trip with our friends. He found not only another sport to enjoy but a snowboard buddy he goes on the slopes with. I like making food for the trip and of course enjoying the day playing in the snow and appreciating the beauty of the mountains. I can feel God enveloping us with His love seeing his creations surround us. All the beauty and pureness of the nature around us makes me feel so relaxed.
Now that spring is just around the corner, I learned how to not hate the slushes and the puddles but to wear nice and cute spring boots and embrace the wet streets. Looking at the brighter side now that I appreciate winter more, I now understand why the change of weather is very important. I hear a lot of people (including myself), complain about how bad winter can be in Alberta but then it cannot be our way. Nature always takes its course and do what needs to be done.
As I have heard from people working around the bushes in the oilfield, they said that because the winter this year is very light, the woods are dry. We are most likely going to have a lot of forest fires. Forest fires are naturally there to help the environment but only to a certain extent. When out of control, it could lead to a big disaster.
Deuteronomy 11:12New International Version (NIV)
12 It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.
Now more than ever, I understand why we need tons of snow and how normal it is to have snow storms every so often. Praying and hoping that no forest fire will harm anyone and anything this summer and everyone will be safe. It is time to be more aware of our environment and we have to start caring. There is a reason why there are seasons and now, I can say that I love winter, spring, summer and fall!
